OMG THE WIND OMG

Too windy and wet to do much today. I brought my waterproof shoes to ensure no rain but that didn't work this time. To keep from going stir crazy, we chose the closest museum to go to. That turned out to be the National Gallery of Iceland which is supposed to contain a history of Icelandic art but really has more modern art from the late 1800s to today.

Outside of Munch, who wasn't from Iceland anyway, you don't know any of the artists. Well maybe you do if you've studied the great artists of Iceland but you can't pronounce their names. One thing impressive about the museum is female artists are well represented. After that we had a quick lunch of pizza and mussels and prepared to pick up our rental car.

We had booked the Blue Lagoon weeks ago because you have to but given the weather today, it probably wasn't necessary. We picked up the rental car and then drove to the Lagoon. Lola drove to the Lagoon and Mickey navigated which mostly requires announcing which exit to take from the roundabouts. There's loads of them. They switched roles on the return. Luckily, we never have to drive in the dark because it never gets dark. They pretend sundown is around 10 but none of us have ever seen the dark.

It was unbelievably windy but at least it wasn't raining until we left. The Lagoon is a great experience in any weather. It's beautiful and interesting.  National Geographic cites it as one of the 25 wonders of the world. Not surprisingly,  it wasn't crowded, probably both because the weather sucked and also became we went late in the day. The water was pleasant,  especially because we ran into hot spots. The wind, however, wreaked havoc on our faces. We have wind burn, even though we were given silica face masks followed by algae masks which they claimed would make us look younger. It worked on us, of course, but not the bald guy who put it on his head. At one point, we were so cold, we went into a sauna for a while. But you can't get back into the water quick enough to keep warm. They give you robes when you check in which you can hang outside while you're in the water. They were all stolen or else blew off the racks so we just stole towels that were lying around. You have to shower before and after the lagoon so many towels are needed. Because of the weather,  the swim up bar wasn't open. Either that, or we didn't see it. The steam coming off the water makes the visibility ramge about 3 feet. The pool itself is huge but we didn't explore much of it.

Pictures from inside the building; we didn't take cameras in the water

There's a cafe and a fancy restaurant at the facility. You're supposed to make a reservation at the fancy restaurant but we got in with no problem.  We didn't want to drive back to the city and then go out. The food was very good but more expensive than all the other restaurants which are all expensive. Iceland is pricey but then we knew that before we came.

The rental car agent told us tomorrow is supposed to have the same weather as today. That is not good news since we are driving the Golden Circle tomorrow. Well, Mickey and Joyce are. My job is to sit in the back seat and be quiet. So far, I've excelled at that task.
